SmartLabs were recognized at this year's Republican National Convention as an innovative, student-focused STEM program. Former SmartLab Facilitator Sean Duffy was a guest speaker during Jeb Bush's address to the RNC convention last night. While Sean is now teaching at a Texas high school, he served as the Facilitator for the SmartLab at Englewood High School, Colorado last year where Creative Learning Systems partnered with his school to implement the STEM program to which he refers.
Sean credits the SmartLab for addressing what students need to learn to become "the next generation of leaders, thinkers, builders, and entrepreneurs". Regardless of political views, I think many will agree with Sean's observations about education. We are proud to be viewed as an innovative and effective approach to preparing today's learners for college and career success. Congratulations Sean and thanks for the shout out!
You can read a transcript of Sean's speech (along with Jeb Bush's complete address) here. And here's a video of Sean's speech.
Among our many new school partners launching SmartLab programs this fall is North Shore School District 112 in Highland Park, Illinois.
Creative Learning Systems partnered with North Shore to implement both a STEM, and a Communications and Media Arts SmartLab in all three district middle schools. Installation and professional development are now completed and we simply could not be any more excited about these programs! The teachers and administration at North Shore are an impressive group indeed and share a common vision for the SmartLab and its potential to further the district’s academic mission. We can’t wait to see these labs with kids in them!
And here’s what the SmartLab Facilitators have to say:
We are thrilled to learn that Javaris Powell, SmartLab Facilitator at Friendship Blow Pierce Junior Academy in Washington D.C., was named a Discover “E” Award Winner by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Below is the video of Javaris and his students produced by ASME in connection with the award.
At our recent summer Facilitator conference, Javaris shared the story-behind-the-story about receiving this prestigious award: the inspiration for pursuing this honor actually came from one of his SmartLab students! Javaris was initially reluctant to submit his name for consideration. It was up to one of his middle school students to remind him that he always encourages them to take risks, aim high, and achieve more than they might have thought possible. Apparently, his young student was both vocal and unrelenting about her expectation that he hold himself up to the same standard. As Javaris noted, we strive daily to inspire our learners but, in a SmartLab, our students often inspire us in the same way.
