July 1, 2008 - Creative Learning Systems Awarded Contract for High School Alternative Energy Program
Creative Learning Systems has been awarded the contract to develop a comprehensive alternative energy educational program for Whitmore Lake High School in Whitmore Lake, Michigan. This groundbreaking program is believed to be the first of its kind offered in a U.S. high school. Both introductory and advanced principles courses will be offered to Whitmore Lake students through this new program.
Students will engage in both hands-on and research-based investigation into solar and wind power, hydrogen fuel cells, geothermal and nuclear energy, bio-fuels and other potential sources of alternative energy. This multidisciplinary program will integrate academic subjects such as science, math, social studies, civics and economics into this engaging and highly relevant topic.
Whitmore Lake High School is already a leader in the use of alternative energy. It was awarded Leeds Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for its energy efficient design that includes an innovative geothermal heating system. Through this new academic program, it is now extending its leadership in this area to the education of its students; an area that is becoming increasingly important for the nation as a whole, and for the Michigan economy in particular.
Creative Learning Systems was selected to develop this program because of their extensive expertise in 21st century learning. Their "SmartLab" 21st century learning labs have long defined the state-of-the-art in multidisciplinary, project-based learning that challenges and engages learners; an educational approach that was uniquely suited to the needs of Whitmore Lake's alternative energy program. To develop course content, Creative Learning Systems partnered with Alternative Energy Education Associates, who's founder, Kathleen Larson, is nationally recognized for her work in alternative energy education.
Matt Dickstein, CEO of Creative Learning Systems said, "We are thrilled to have been selected to partner with Whitmore Lake High School on this innovative program. Alternative energy research is engaging, relevant, and is a natural integration point for a wide spectrum of academic disciplines. We believe this will be a national model for similar programs in this emerging field".
