Project in a Nutshell: Virginia City, a small Nevada middle school, had limited space and resources, but wanted to offer their students some of the same 21st century learning opportunities available in a traditional SmartLab. Creative Learning Systems worked with the school to create a hands-on center of application with learning resources to augment their existing science and computer lab programs.

Project in a Nutshell: Brandon High School had a traditional modules-based technology education program that was not meeting the current vision of the school. By integrating some of the schools existing furniture and resources, Creative Learning Systems designed a highly-customized cost-saving implementation solution for the school. This allowed the school to evolve their technology education program to address critical 21st century skills, offer a rich media arts program, and stay within a tight development budget.

Project in a Nutshell: Duke Ellington School of the Arts is a prestigious magnet school in Washington DC. With a national reputation for excellence in fine and performing arts, the Ellington School was looking to expand its offering in the area digital media arts. Creative Learning Systems designed and installed a state-of-the-art live-edit video production platform as a centerpiece of this new initiative.

Project in a Nutshell: In partnership with Whitmore Lake High School, Creative Learning Systems broke new ground by implementing the first high school program in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to the study of alternative and renewable energies. The Alternative Energy SmartLab is an engaging multidisciplinary program with a strong emphasis in STEM as well as social studies and language arts. With an engaging project-based approach, the Whitmore Lake Alternative Energy SmartLab will serve as a pilot for similar programs across the country.

Project in a Nutshell: The SmartLabs at Imagine School's new Apache Junction and Surprise campuses are identical facilities each designed to accommodate 48 concurrent learners. These schools utilize a web-based instructional learning system to deliver core content. The SmartLabs complements this educational model by providing an additional focus on 21st century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, project management and communication.

Project in a Nutshell: Imagine Groveport Prep offers a unique method of instruction, blending classroom instruction, an instructional learning system and a comprehensive SmartLab program. The SmartLab at Imagine Groveport is a PC-based four-island lab with a dedicated group learning zone. The long-range plan is to augment this program with a second SmartLab as the school expands to accommodate additional grade levels.

Project in a Nutshell: Since 1995, Creative Learning Systems had partnered with Mesquite Independent School District to implement SmartLab programs in nine of its secondary schools. With the addition of McDonald Middle School, all district middle school students will now have access to the SmartLab 21st century learning opportunity. The McDonald Middle School SmartLab is a cross-platform network utilizing both Mac and PC's and accommodates class sizes of up to 42 concurrent learners.

Project in a Nutshell: When Tom Delgado was appointed Principal of Brighton Colorado's newest middle school, he had a clear vision for his educational program. Earlier in his career, Tom had been a SmartLab Facilitator and had seen first-hand how the program could transform learning. With a traditionally underserved demographic, Tom's goal was to go from worst to first in district standardized exam scores. With a SmartLab as a core academic element, Prairie View Middle school is well on its way to deliver on that promise.

Project in a Nutshell: When Imagine School's Great Western Academy decided to add middle school programs to their existing elementary programs, they turned to a Creative Learning Systems SmartLab to help attract new students and promote 21st century skills. This large, five-island SmartLab includes a technology-enabled group learning zone. This allows Great Western to also use the SmartLab to teach elementary grade science in a more traditional teaching format.

Project in a Nutshell: The installation of SmartLabs in 9 existing middle schools in Washoe County, Nevada completes the third phase of this two-year district-wide project. All Washoe County middle school students now have access to SmartLab programs. Even though each school had dramatically different floor-plans, class sizes and models of usage. Creative Learning Systems was able to fulfill it's commitment to the district to tailor SmartLab configurations to each school's individual needs while ensuring that all students throughout the district had equal access to SmartLab resources.

As a result of the vision shown by the Washoe School District in Reno, NV, they are now a national model for integrating 21st century skills in public education. Creative Learning Systems is proud to have been their partner in this effort.

Project in a Nutshell: Indiana Life Sciences Academy is a new elementary/middle school in the Imagine family of charter schools. As a school-of-choice, the SmartLab is a showcase for the school and a critical element in its appeal to new students and their parents. This SmartLab is located in a prominent place in the school and is surrounded by glass. The ILSA SmartLab is a four-island, cross-platform environment and includes a Mobile Video Console for live-edit video production.

Project in a Nutshell: Mesa Middle School is an International Baccalaureate school located in Douglas County School District in south metro Denver. This four-island SmartLab includes off-island computer workstations to accommodate 30 concurrent learners. To meet school-wide computer standards, the Mesa Middle School SmartLab uses Macintosh computers throughout the learning environment.

Project in a Nutshell: Due to budget constraints at the time of the original SmartLab installation in 2006, Creative Learning Systems designed the River Forest SmartLab as a two-phase implementation. With additional funding, the second-phase of this new SmartLab was completed in 2008. This second-phase provided additional and advanced learning resources including hydroponics, robotics, sound engineering, video production, and expanded construction sets and computer resources.

Project in a Nutshell: A unique benefit of the SmartLab system is its ability to provide engaging learning opportunities over many years. Given the amount of technology integrated in these 21st century learning labs, this is a unique benefit indeed. The Carlsbad High School SmartLab was originally installed in 1998. This comprehensive upgrade included a furniture retrofit to the new team-top configuration, new computers and updated software, updated construction sets, electronic and control apparatus and new learning resources.

Project in a Nutshell: Following a very successful trial at Cold Springs Middle School in 2006, Washoe School District is instituting SmartLab programs at all of its 13 middle schools. Phase I of this broad implementation was completed in January at O'Brien, Sparks and Vaughn Middle Schools. A critical design challenge was to ensure that each student throughout the district was able to benefit from a similar learning experience while accommodating the different class size and space requirements of each school. Phases II and III of this project will be completed in spring and summer of 2008 respectively.

Project in a Nutshell: Located on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona, Pinon's new SmartLab provides an engaging, technology-based learning experience in this traditionally underserved community. The Pinon SmartLab features four islands along with a seminar zone for group instruction. To accommodate a tight implementation budget, Creative Learning Systems worked with Pinon to integrate computers the school already owned where possible, supplementing them with new iMacs for media intensive applications.

Project in a Nutshell: Funded through a grant from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, this SmartLab provides 21st century learning for students on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in rural Montana. This four-island SmartLab was constructed in the former lunch room and includes advanced media production tools, a mobile presentation platform and an extensive robotics exploration collection.

Project in a Nutshell: Southeast Academy is the most recent project in the highly successful partnership between Friendship Public Charter Schools and Creative Learning Systems. It is our third elementary school SmartLab in the DC area. This four-island SmartLab features both Mac and PC computer platforms and includes both our elementary level resource collection as well as more sophisticated technological tools for advanced learners. Like all the Friendship SmartLabs, it serves as a resource for the entire school; teachers in all subject areas integrate SmartLab resources into their lesson plans and students can request SmartLab passes to perform independent project work.

Project in a Nutshell: Washoe High School is an alternative high school for at-risk students. To accommodate a wide range of needs, this SmartLab features a broad array of resources, from beginning technological tools to advanced professional-level applications. With its specialized demographic and high transition rate, students can work on self-directed projects of varying duration either alone or in groups. The goal of the Washoe High School SmartLab is to meet students where they are and provide a challenging and engaging learning experience to reinvigorate their interest in education.

Project in a Nutshell: Medea Creek Middle School is an excellent example of how a well run program can succeed with even minimal investment. Originally installed in 1992, this was the first major upgrade to the program in 15 years and was implemented on a tight budget. In addition to new iMacs and updated software, this upgrade included a furniture retrofit with the new team-tops, curriculum and resources update and new video production equipment.

Project in a Nutshell: Originally installed in 1996 and expanded and upgraded in 1999 and 2001, the Lovington High School Plaza continues set the pace for innovative 21st century learning. This most recent upgrade included an updated Global Commons communications and presentation zone, computer and software updates, a new biotechnology zone and a comprehensive furniture upgrade. In addition, the video production studio was upgraded with the Tricaster live-edit production system and advanced video capture and post-production resources.

Project in a Nutshell: The award-winning Lovington Quest Center is a supplemental learning center for talented and gifted students in grades 2-9. Creative Learning Systems designed a comprehensive technology-based center to provide students throughout the district with enhanced, inquiry-based learning opportunities. The Lovington Quest Center serves up to 24 concurrent learners and includes media development and presentation systems, advanced modeling systems, probeware, mobile computing platforms and other learning resources.

Project in a Nutshell: Creative Learning Systems has partnered with Mesquite Independent School District for 12 years, and has installed successful programs in seven of the district's middle schools. A.C. New had a traditional industrial arts program that it wanted to replace with a SmartLab 21st century learning lab. The SmartLab at A.C. New is a five-island lab, including an advanced media island and features both PC and Macintosh computer workstations.

Project in a Nutshell: In connection with a major facility renovation project, Summit Middle School asked Creative Learning Systems to design the first upgrade to its 10 year-old SmartLab. As part of their renovation plan, we were also asked to plan and implement the relocation of the SmartLab to another part of the building. The Summit SmartLab is still operating with its original facilitator, and has been a popular class since its inception in 1997. Summit Middle school students will now benefit from new computers, a comprehensive curriculum resource enhancement and the collaboration-friendly team tops with arm-mounted LCD screens.

Project in a Nutshell: Partnering with one of the most successful schools in New Mexico, the SmartLab has been a core element in Southwest Learning Center's instructional model since the school opened in 2002. At SLC, students acquire core knowledge though a computer-based instructional system and then have the opportunity to apply that knowledge in the SmartLab. This comprehensive upgrade included an innovative high-definition mobile video production platform with live webcasting capabilities. In addition, an elementary level curriculum enhancement supports SLC expansion with SmartLab resources for younger grades. And advanced robotics and wind-tunnel resource collections supports in-depth exploration in these popular areas of inquiry.

Project in a Nutshell: Wilson Elementary is an award-winning school serving economically disadvantaged students in Phoenix, Arizona. With a SmartLab program dating back to 1993, Wilson has always made it a priority to ensure that their students continue to benefit from current technologies. To that end, this was the fourth upgrade Creative Learning Systems has implemented for the Wilson SmartLab. This upgrade included new computers and arm-mounted LCD screens, a furniture retrofit to the new space saving team tops and new video-production systems.

Project in a Nutshell: Ronan school district serves students in heart of the Flathead Indian reservation in Western Montana. Following the successful implementation of the Ronan Middle School SmartLab in 2005, Creative Learning Systems developed this fully-articulated program for Ronan High School. To build on the advanced work now being done at the Middle School, this lab features advanced project management applications, a high-definition video post-production system and a bio-technology research zone.

Project in a Nutshell: During a visit to the Creative Learning Plaza at Mid-Pacific Institute, Kapi'olani Community College had seen the way our integrated solutions fostered high-context, collaborative learning in a technology-enabled environment. In connection with a major renovation, they asked Creative Learning Systems to adapt its SmartLab furniture systems for three major school facilities; a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center, a Physics and Engineering Lab and a Multipurpose Lab. Creative Learning Systems developed fully-customized solutions for the specific requirements for these facilities and provided Kapi'olani with a full turn-key solution including consultation, design services, and installation.

Project in a Nutshell: New Buffalo is beautiful resort community on the shores of Lake Michigan. For their combination Middle and High school they asked Creative Learning Systems to develop a SmartLab environment that would serve students of many ages, abilities, interests and experience levels. Among the most comprehensive environments we have ever designed, the New Buffalo SmartLab utilizes both PC and Macintosh computer platforms. It features many of our most advanced technology collections including advanced media and sound engineering, hydroponics and life sciences. This SmartLab also included a mini-studio along with the new Mobile Video Console for advanced video production capabilities. Adjacent to the SmartLab, we also developed a technology-enabled seminar theater with state-of-the-art projection and sound systems to serve the entire school community.

The school and the entire New Buffalo community are justifiably proud of this facility - one of the most advanced in the country. They will be hosting Creative Learning Systems annual Advanced Facilitator Development Conference (AFDC) in summer 2007.

Where: Halifax County Middle School, South Boston, VA

Project in a Nutshell: The SmartLab at Halifax Middle School is Creative Learning Systems' largest installation for 2006. This nine-island environment is designed to accommodate up to 54 concurrent learners led by two facilitators. The curriculum and technology was designed to prepare Halifax Middle School students for the high school Career Academies including STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), Fine Arts, Health and Human Services, Environmental Science and International Business. The architects designed this new building to showcase the SmartLab with large windows offering views into this state-of-the-art facility from both outside the school and from an interior hallway.

Adjacent to the SmartLab, Creative Learning Systems also developed a Lego Robotics Exploration lab. This facility was also designed to function as a technology-enabled seminar theater for the school. In addition to use for the SmartLab and Lego programs, the seminar theater will be used by other classes as well as for faculty development and after-school programs.

As with all SmartLabs, the Whitmore Lakes environment develops critical thinking skills while building connections between core academic subjects and technology education.

Continuing its highly successful partnership with Friendship Public Charter Schools, the new SmartLab at Chamberlain will continue to foster technological advancement for the inner-city DC youth served by these innovative schools.

Project in a Nutshell: Cold Springs is Creative Learning System's first SmartLab installation in Nevada. CLS worked closely with Cold Spring's project architects to design an environment to accommodate 36 concurrent learners in a relatively small classroom space. This four-island environment features custom selected furniture and fixture colors to integrate with the school's overall color theme.

Project in a Nutshell: As part of a major remodeling project, River Forest wanted to offer their students the benefits of a SmartLab. For this combined junior/senior high school, Creative Learning Systems designed a five-island environment with advanced multimedia production capabilities. With general remodeling costs exceeding estimates, CLS worked closely with the school to integrate existing district workstation and server resources in order to reduce the costs of the SmartLab component of the remodeling project.

Project in a Nutshell: Terry Middle School is Mesquite ISD's first new middle school in many years. With successful programs in each of their other middle schools, the district asked Creative Learning Systems to design a SmartLab program incorporating all of the latest technologies. This five-island environment takes advantage of cross-platform computer systems with extensive use of Mac workstations for graphics, multimedia and portfolio development applications.

Project in a Nutshell: Located in rural New Mexico, Loving High School administrators were able to see the success of several SmartLab programs in nearby Carlsbad. This five-island SmartLab included an advanced media island along with the 2006 wind tunnel configuration featuring LCD touch-screen computer interface.

Project in a Nutshell: High Tech High is a new charter school in Albuquerque NM affiliated with University of New Mexico. Established in a former athletic club facility, Creative Learning Systems was given the challenge of designing a SmartLab environment for a space that previously served as a racquetball court. The glass walls surrounding this small two-island environment now serve to showcase this resource for families evaluating this school-of-choice.

Project in a Nutshell: The John Glenn High School SmarttLab was designed to integrate with and take advantage of the wood and metal fabrication resources of the school's industrial arts program. Here, learners can fabricate projects developed using the technology-based resources in the SmartLab. Among the unique design challenges in this SmartLab, CLS installed an integrated 50" plasma presentation display to provide technology-enabled presentation capabilities in a space impractical for projector use.

What: SmartLab Upgrade

Project in a Nutshell: At AIMS Community College, the SmartLab is a focal point of a unique high school diploma program for drop-outs and other at-risk students. Originally installed in 2000, AIMS required new computer hardware and software systems. Along with this complete system upgrade, Creative Learning Systems installed new curriculum, constructions sets, sound engineering and video production equipment. CLS also updated AIMS SmartLab furniture to the current team-tops with arm-mounted LCD monitors. With it's updated SmartLab facility, AIMS was the proud host of the 2006 CLS Advanced Facilitator Development Conference.

Where: P.R. Leyva Middle School, Carlsbad, NM
What: SmartLab Upgrade

Project in a Nutshell: As part of a systematic upgrade of its middle school SmartLabs, this year Carlsbad Municipal Schools asked Creative Learning Systems to design an upgrade for P.R. Leyva. Fully nine-years after its original installation, the P.R. Leyva program was still operating successfully - a testament to the longevity of the CLS learning system as well as the excellence of the school's SmartLab facilitator. This comprehensive upgrade included new computer systems, curriculum, furniture upgrades, curriculum and multimedia production equipment.

Where: Kraft Middle School and Duncan Middle School, Caledonia, MI

Project in a Nutshell: With the changing economic landscape in Michigan, Caledonia Community Schools knew it was critical to offer their students 21st Century skill sets. They asked Creative Learning Systems to develop identical SmartLab programs for their two middle schools within the constraints of a severely limited budget. CLS was able to meet their goals with SmartLabs accommodating class sizes of up to 30 concurrent learners. These SmartLabs include all core programmatic elements, providing learners with introductory experiences in each system of technology. Each environment was configured to be easily and efficiently upgraded, providing additional program depth as learners progress and as district funds become available.

Where: Mountain View High School, Loveland, CO
What: SmartLab Upgrade

Project in a Nutshell: With a limited budget, Mountain View initially thought they would only be able to afford a server and system upgrade. However, in addition to meeting all of those objectives, Creative Learning Systems was also able to help them fully update their furniture. Mountain View became the first school to receive the 2006 SmartLab workstations equipped with arm-mounted LCD monitors.
