Alternative energy is at the crossroads of science, math, geography, political science, economics and ethics. Through its exploration, students merge core subject areas in a context that's both academically rigorous and immediately relevant.
In 2008, Creative Learning Systems introduced the nation's first comprehensive high school level program dedicated to the study of alternative energy. The program blends research with engaging hands-on activities. Students learn about solar energy, wind power, hydrogen fuel cell technology and other sources of renewable and alternative energy. They explore the economic, geopolitical, environmental and social implications of each alternative and evaluate current and future viability.
As in all SmartLabs, students applied leading-edge technology tools to enhance their learning. Scientific probeware is used to record and process experimental data. Computer resources enable research into emerging developments, analysis of data, and documentation of findings. Media equipment facilitates advanced presentation and communication skills.
The Alternative Energy SmartLab combines an engaging multidisciplinary curriculum with a learning methodology that emphasizes 21st century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and communication, information and media literacy.
