In a makerspace, students utilize technology to create physical and digital inventions. Makerspaces are hands-on learning environments where collaboration, creativity and problem-solving happen every day. They’re innovative programs in which learners are self-directed, intrinsically motivated, and fully engaged in the design process.
Over three million makers and counting
While the name “makerspace” is a buzzword in education, we’ve been partnering with schools to implement maker programs since 1987. We call them SmartLabs and over 3,000,000 students have benefited from our programs.
Technology tools have changed over the years but the guiding principle remains the same—put technology in the hands of students and empower them to create, explore and invent. SmartLabs provide a wide range of physical and digital maker resources including:
- 3D printing
- 3D carving
- Circuitry and microelectronics
- Game design
- Digital graphics
- Video production
- Website creation
- Machine construction
- Bridges and structures
- Solar energy
- Wind turbines
- Digital home design
SmartLabs are much more than just collections of maker tools and supplies – they’re complete, turnkey programs. We evaluate every technology for safety, reliability, affordability and ease of use. We support makers with curriculum and learning resources. We provide teachers with professional development and assessment tools. And we stand behind everything we provide with complete technical and pedagogical support.
“The SmartLab has so many great resources for our students. It’s like a makerspace on overdrive!”
